Invisalign-Clear Tooth Aligners by Dr.George Bardawil

Introduced in 1999 by Align Technologies, Invisalign incorporates a series of
invisible (clear) plastic aligners that fit comfortably over your teeth and are
designed to move your teeth gradually into the desired position. Today, Invisalign
is a leading brand of orthodontic appliance, primarily because the removable
aligners (less than one millimeter thick) are designed to be more esthetically
pleasing than conventional wire-and-bracket dental braces for treating certain
types of minor misaligned tooth problems.
How Invisalign Works
The use of a series of removable
aligners for the adjustment of
occlusion (bite) is not new. The
Invisalign method is based on a
concept first introduced in the 1940s and revisited in the 1970s that required a
series of dental impressions to determine the optimal position of the teeth. The
Invisalign method is simpler than its predecessors, requiring only one set of
impressions and photographs of the teeth, taken during an initial consultation.
These impressions are used to create a three-dimensional computer projection of
how the teeth could be moved incrementally, forming the basis for developing a
series of custom-made aligners designed to accomplish this movement.
Invisalign aligners are manufactured using computer-aided design/computeraided
manufacturing (CAD/CAM) processes. The aligners are sent to the dentist,
who typically dispenses them in groups of one or two at a time during regular
check-up appointments (about every four to six weeks) so that treatment can be
properly managed. Each aligner must be worn in its specific order for about two
weeks, during which time it moves the teeth in small increments of about .25
millimeters to .33 millimeters. Although the aligners are removable (for eating,
drinking certain beverages and brushing/flossing), they must be worn at least 20
hours a day in order to reposition the teeth successfully.
A typical Invisalign treatment requires 20 to 30 aligners for both the upper and
lower teeth. Most adults complete their treatment in less than one year. However,
treatment time depends on the specific alignment problem.

Invisalign, clear tooth aligners are one of the more popular
alternatives for those who find the idea of a mouthful of metal
braces and brackets too unattractive to commit to. If you are a
candidate for Invisalign or other "invisible braces," you don't
have to sacrifice your smile while straightening your teeth.

Invisalign Instructions :
  • Wear the aligners full time. Take aligners out only to brush, floss, and eat. Each aligner should be worn for 2 weeks at a time, unless Dr. Bardawil specifies differently. NEVER SKIP ALIGNERS. EACH SET MUST BE WORN EXACTLY AS DIRECTED BY DR. BARDAWIL
  • You may drink with your aligners in. Colored drinks and smoking may discolor your aligners, just as they discolor your teeth, but keep in mind, every 2 weeks you are moving to a new set.
  • Do not throw any of your aligners away. Bring your last set with you to every appointment.
  • If you have tooth colored attachments, check them daily.  If one happens to come off, call our office so we can decide if we need to add enough time to your next appointment to repair it.
  • If you lose an aligner, wear the next sequential aligner if you have it. If not, wear the immediate previous aligner. It is extremely important to wear something to prevent the teeth from shifting. Then, call our office so we can advise you regarding what to do next.
  • When you begin wearing a new set of aligners, they may not fit quite like you think they should. This is normal. It is important that they fit well after the 2 week period. If they do not fit well, it may be best to wear them for an extra week. If you have any questions, call our office.
  • When changing to your next set of aligners, doing so at night allows easier removal in the morning, and minimizes any discomfort that you may have.
  • Occasionally, you may have a sharp edge on an aligner. You may use an emery board to smooth it. If it is still rough or sharp, call our office so we can make you comfortable.
  • You may clean aligners with a toothbrush and toothpaste. We do not recommend mouthwash by itself. The aligners tend to pick up the strong color in the mouthwash.
  • If you have any kind of pets, keep your aligners in the case and out of the pet’s reach. They love the smell of your saliva, and will eat through the case and the aligners.
  • Please make sure you make your next appointment before you leave the office after each visit. Your appointments will usually be every 6 weeks, unless Dr. Bardawil directs you otherwise

Thumb sucking habit should be eliminated prior to age 7-Dr.George Bardawil

Van presented in our clinic with a severe anterior openbite and protrusive incisors due to a persistent thumb sucking habit. Van was treated in Phase I with a tongue guard to break the habit, followed by braces on her upper and lower incisors to develop a proper overbite and beautiful smile aesthetics.Congratulations Van -http://www.drgeorgebardawil.com/

phase 1-habit elimination using a tongue crib

As an orthodontist I work with children, adolescents, and adults to help overcome prolonged thumbsucking habits. A thumbsucking habit (which may manifest in adulthood to a thumbnail biting habit) often results in significant skeletal deformities such as maxillary arch constriction (narrow upper jaw), aperto-gnathia (skeletal openbite or upward sloping palate), anterior dental openbite, and bilateral posterior crossbite.
We do know that habitual thumbsucking appears to be a means of relief from tension (i.e. the child is tired, hungry, or sad) and associated with pleasure and comfort. Research also shows a direct correlation between the probability of thumbsucking with the degree of introversion (shy children may have a greater likelihood of prolonged thumbsucking).Early correction of thumbsucking may prevent against the development of a skeletal or dental malocclusion, and the associated speech and masticatory difficulties. I suggest parents attempt to correct a thumb habit no later than 7 years of age, prior to the eruption of the permanent incisors.
phase 2- after braces

It is critical to remember that a constructive, positive approach in which the patient can gain self confidence and take pride in accomplishment is always better than a destructive approach of nagging or belittling.
